Are you ready to get your channel merchandise?
If you’re reading this, then we’re gonna assume that you’re pretty successful on YouTube. Your channel is a success, you’ve amassed an audience, and you’re trying to make some extra money by selling channel merchandise. Maybe it’s just a T-shirt, or maybe it’s a full-on book you’ve written, either way you want to advertise it. Here’s how.
Don’t Shove Your Audience’s Face In It
The first step is to avoid looking like you’re e-begging. While it’s true that you’re doing something to earn money, people on the internet can be very fickle sometimes. Even if you’re simply trying to sell something you’ve put work into, there will be those that will criticize you for it.
What we recommend is having a clip at the end of your videos that show your merchandise, to prove that it exists, and a brief reading saying what you have for sale, shirts, books etc. and that’s really all you need when it comes to your videos.
Keep it short and brief at the end so that the audience isn’t put off by having to sit through a two minute advertisement of your stuff, before they can even watch your video.
We also recommend having an easily removable annotation in the bottom corner of your video with the link to buy your merchandise. This is a non-invasive way of pushing your merchandise without rubbing your audiences face in it. The more time you spend trying to sell your merchandise, the more that people will reject it if they feel it’s being pushed down their throats.
Get The Word Out On Social Media
The next step is simply using social media, like Facebook and Twitter fan pages, to share what new merchandise is available as it becomes available. Be sure to advertise your merchandise on Facebook once a week (but not more) to ensure that it reaches new fans each time.
Alternatively, you can pay money to have your Facebook post boosted so that more people who ordinarily wouldn’t have seen the post find it. Just make sure that you’re able to gain more than you lose financially, and this is a good way of getting new eyes and perspective buyers of your shirts.
Use A Good Distributor
It’s also a good idea to use a reputable distributor of merchandise used by popular YouTubers and companies. Consistent deliveries mean more consistent buys. It’s all too common that people order material from their favourite YouTuber’s only to find it hasn’t arrived, often without a refund. If this happens consistently your merch sales will suffer greatly for it.
That’s why we recommend Spreadshirt for all your merchandising needs, as it is a very reputable distribution site. Our network partners get special offers if they use Spreadshirt, so be sure to check them out if you’re part of our awesome network!
Make Use of Patreon
Creating and selling merchandise can be a great way to make extra money, but it likely won’t be the majority of your earnings if you are a Career-YouTuber. Make sure that you do well with ad revenue and Patreon donations, and you’ll likely not have to worry too much about t-shirt sales.
Better yet, give out some free merchandise to high paying patrons. This will hopefully encourage more people to donate higher quantities of money in exchange for free goods. This will keep food on your table, and interest in your merchandise.
