Get the best lighting for your YouTube channel!
Having the best lighting is by far one of the most important parts of cinematography. Nearly all films use artificial lighting to increase the quality of on screen footage and those that don’t are either awful movies made by people who just didn’t bother, like Birdemic, or films with extraordinary cameras and a great understanding of how to reflect natural lighting, like the Revenant.
Even if your videos are just you sitting in a room, talking about stuff that you like, it’s never a bad idea to look into a good lighting kit to increase video quality. While it’s certainly not a must, for those who really want to achieve that look done by some of the more popular YouTubers out there, it’s definitely something worth considering.
1. Neewer® 700W Prof Photography 24″x24″/60x60cm Softbox w/E27 Socket Light Lighting Kit
This kit from Neewer is very affordable and is probably your best lighting bet if you’re just starting out. If you’re quite young and starting YouTube you may have to save up, but for those of you who already have jobs then this is a pretty small investment with big time gains.
This kit is small but has everything you need for good video lighting, and also photoshoots for those of you who have photography as a hobby. The bulb has a low operating temperature too, which means you won’t be sweating and gleaming on camera.
2. StudioFX 2400W 3-Piece Photo Lighting Kit
While it doesn’t come with a backdrop, this is another great lighting kit for those who are just starting out and don’t want to spend a thousand dollars just to light their videos.
It does only come with one lofted light bulb but it is still a great choice when you’re starting out as it covers all the basics that you need, including a boom. A boom is a necessity if you ever need lighting coming from higher angles.
3. ePhoto Professional Photography Kit
While I will say that this is one of the best affordable kits out there, coming complete with greenscreen for chromakeying, as well as lights I would also say that it can cost anywhere between $200 and $400 depending on where you get it from.
It certainly has everything you need to make some more advanced YouTube videos, and it’s most likely the set that Angry Joe would use, however it will require more saving than any of the others on this list. Despite that, it’s far from the most expensive kit out there.
4. Softbox Studio Lighting Kit – Photogeeks
Like most lighting kits this was made with photography in mind but it also useful for video making.
It’s relatively cheap too and not really different from the other kits available here, but this ones affordability is what makes it most appealing.
A slightly different alternative for lighting is using flolights and making your own lighting rig on the cheap.
This can be very effective if you know what parts to get and flolights is very useful allowing you get rigs based on your needs.
